BRETHEREN EVANGELICAL MISSIONARY INITIATIVES AND COUNSELLORS – UGANDA
(BEVEMIC - U)
Our Mission

While Government has put emphasis on improving the condition of the girl child and women in general, the problems created
by teenage pregnancy have had little direct attention. The concern is that the consequences of teenage pregnancy and children
infected and affected by HIV/AIDS the positive gains that had been made in that direction. As more Children more girls drop
out of school as a result of pregnancy lack of school fees, e.t.c they have little prospects for living a meaningful life.
This implies that all the investment that the country had put in uplifting the future of those girls/children is lost. If
this trend continues unchecked, the future of this country is at stake. The old age that women are the mothers of the nation
still holds. As long as the morals and livelihood of girls (the future mothers of the nation) continue to be eroded the future
population of Uganda is a stake.

It is this concern that has led to the formation of Bretheren Evangelical Missionary Initiatives and Counselors –
Uganda (BEVEMIC – U) to address the teenage pregnancy problem. BEVEMIC – U is a non-Governmental Organization
(NGO) born out of the desire to reverse the growing phenomenon of teenage pregnancy and save the girls, children and future
of this country through attitudinal change and provision of support for teenage girls/children. BEVEMIC – U’s
vision is to reverse the trend by addressing the situation from the causes as well as consequences of teenage pregnancy and
children Infected and Affected HIV/AIDS.
The overall objectives are to reduce teenage pregnancy among teenage girls,
children Infected and Affected HIV/AIDs improve the welfare of teenage mothers.
The specific short-term objectives
are to:
Strengthen care and support for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
Build
and strengthen the capacity at all levels to respond to the burden of HIV/AIDS and early teenage pregnancies.
Provide psychological and healthcare counseling to teenage pregnant girls and mothers. Assist teenage pregnant
girls to access health care support.
Provide support for acquisition of self-employment skills to 60 teenage
pregnant girls and mothers through training.
Enhance the prevention of S.T.D. infections and HIV/AIDS.
The
Government policy of improving the condition of the girl child, orphans and women in general is a positive development that
has aroused great hopes for the future of women/children in this country. While effort has been directed at other needs such
as education and AIDs control, little attention has been given to the socio-economic crisis faced by girls/orphans who get
pregnant when they are still teenagers. The increasing number of girls who drop out of school due to pregnancy and the
resultant socio-economic difficulties they face thereafter are likely to undermine all the efforts that have been put in improving
the condition of the girl child/young people.
With more effort directed at changing the behavior of teenage girls
coupled with support for self-reliance for the unfortunate ones who get pregnant, there is hope that efforts directed at helping
the girl child will bear fruit. Without providing this intervention, the country faces the risk of having more problems as
more teenage pregnancies are likely to lead to children who will create more teenage pregnancies and other associated evils
such as prostitution and street children.
